11/27/16 Joy to the World: Choose Joy

Homily from the First Sunday of Advent.

Joy can be a feeling, but it is also a choice.

God desires your happiness. But this happiness is more than mere pleasure and more than mere emotion. True joy, like true love, is a decision. Joy is the sense of well-being that is the result of the certain expectation or possession of one’s heart’s desire.

Mass Readings from November 27, 2016:
Isaiah 2:1-5
Psalm 122: 1-9
Romans 13:11-14
Matthew 24:37-44

11/20/16 Homesick: With Him

Homily from the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

What is it that makes “paradise” Paradise?

Home isn’t home unless someone is there. And Heaven is not Heaven without God. Other people are one of the great joys of Heaven, but the Greatest Thing is not merely “others”, but “The Other”. The heart of Heaven is God Himself.

Mass Readings from November 20, 2016:
2 Samuel 5:1-3
Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5
Colossians 1:12-20
Luke 23:35-43

11/13/16 Homesick: A Body Like His

Homily from the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time.

We will all be changed...in the blink of an eye.

"I believe in the resurrection of the dead.” That means your resurrection. God has destined us to get our bodies back at His final coming. But what will those bodies be like? How will they be changed? How will they be new? The answer is hidden in what Christ’s body is like.

Mass Readings from November 13, 2016:
Malachi 3:19-20
Psalm 98:5-6, 7-8, 9
2 Thessalonians 3:7-12
Luke 21:5-19

Scriptures Referenced in the Homily:
1 Corinthians 15:51
1 Corinthians 15:35-37, 42-49
Gospel of John, Chapter 20

11/06/16 Homesick: Here and Now...There and Then

Homily from the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Heaven is the one thing that gives this world meaning.

Without Heaven (and Hell), life is essentially meaningless and Death wins. The Resurrection proves that Death is not the last word and that the wisest way to live in the “Here and Now” is oriented towards “There and Then”. But what will Heaven be like?

Mass Readings from November 6, 2016:
2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14
Psalm 17:1, 5-6, 8, 15
2 Thessalonians 2:16-3:5
Luke 20:27-38
