10/30/16 Faith Works: The Fruit of Faith

Homily from the Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Faith that moves is the only faith that matters.

The Christian Faith will never be relevant if it remains at the level of private, personal belief and does not transform our lives. Faith is meant to move us. Faith is meant to transform us. Faith is meant to bear fruit in a life that looks like the life of Jesus. The fruit of faith is a changed life. A faith that works is a faith that moves…and this is the only kind of faith that matters.

Mass Readings from October 30, 2016:
Wisdom 11:22-12:2
Psalm 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13, 14
2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2

10/23/16 Faith Works: Resume Faith

Homily from the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Is faith about what is on your resumé?

Are you stuck in the trap where you have to do enough, so that you have enough, in order to be enough? If faith merely comes down to presenting God with our resume, then we are not faithful…we are superstitious. Christian faith is appealing to Jesus’ work, not ours. Christian faith is about appealing to Jesus’ victory, not ours. Christian faith is about appealing to Jesus’ goodness, not our own.

Mass Readings from October 23, 2016:
Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18
Psalm 34:2-3, 17-18, 19, 23
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

10/16/16 Faith Works: The Forge of Faith

Homily from the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Great faith is the result of small, repeated “yeses" over time.

Every great story needs a beginning. But it needs more than just a beginning. A great story requires tension, obstacles, and patient perseverance. When we give God our “yes”, even when we don’t know how the story will end, we are walking the path of faith. This path is necessary to become the people God will us to be. But it is easy to forget and hard to remember the reasons we are walking in the first place. Because of that, we all need reminders in our lives who call us back to our “yes”.

Mass Readings from October 16, 2016:
Exodus 17:8-13
Psalm 121:1-8
2 Timothy 3:14-4:2
Luke 18:1-8

10/09/16 Faith Works: Beginning Faith

Homily from the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

"Something happened to me…and now I’m Yours."

Faith is first of all a response. It is the response to an encounter with God. In a completely free way, God reveals Himself. Intellectual faith responds with “I believe you”. Living faith responds with “I want to behave in the way you are calling me to”. Simple faith responds with “I belong to you”. Ultimately, faith is “saying yes” to God.

Mass Readings from October 9, 2016:
2 Kings 5:14-17
Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4
2 Timothy 2:8-13
Luke 17:11-19

10/02/16 Interrupted: Divine Appointments

Homily from the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Use what you have.

It's not that we don't have enough gifts, it's that we waste a lot of them. Once we realize that we have gifts and that God will bring about "divine appointments", every interruption becomes an opportunity.

Mass Readings from October 2, 2016:
Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4
Psalm 95:1-2, 6-9
2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14
Luke 17:5-10
