11/29/15 The Promise: A Part of the Promise

Homily from the First Sunday in Advent.

Mary, the Mother of God, is a part of the promise. And so are you.

We can look back to the distant past. We can look to some unseen future. Or we can realize that we are called to participate in the Promises of God right here. Right now.

Mass Readings from November 29, 2015:
Jeremiah 33:14-16
1 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2
Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

11/22/15 Christ the King

Homily from the Solemnity Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

Is the Lord of the Universe the Lord of my life?

We all have something broken inside of us that we wish wasn’t there. We can try to ignore or or attempt to manage it. Those solutions never work. There is another way: we can let Jesus Christ, Lord of the Universe, be the Lord of our lives…including our brokenness.

Mass Readings from November 22, 2015:
Daniel 7:13-14
Revelation 1:5-8
John 18:33B-37

Due to the holiday there is no Bible Study this week. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

11/15/15 Ordinary Time: Grow and Guard

Homily from the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time.

We guard what we value.

If God has a vision for life, we have to grow that vision. We have to cultivate it and use it. But we also have to care for God’s vision for our lives. We have to protect and guard it. Above all else, guard your heart. If we don’t guard this “central part” of ourselves, we won’t have it when we need it.

Mass Readings from November 15, 2015:
Daniel 12:1-3
Hebrews 10:11-14, 18
Mark 13:24-32

11/08/15 Ordinary Time: The Last Ten Percent

Homily from the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Do you give out of your surplus or out of your substance?

Our lives are marked by sacrifice. In many ways, Christian sacrifice is taking ordinary things and making them sacred by offering them to God. But if we only offer God our surplus, then the only things in our lives that get transformed are our “extra” things. The core of our life remains unchanged. We can give God our “first fruits”…our first ten percent. Or we can live extraordinary lives by giving God the last ten percent.

Mass Readings from November 08, 2015:
1 Kings 17:10-16
Hebrews 9:24-28
Mark 12:38-44

11/01/15 Ordinary Time: Ask. Offer. Accept.

Homily from the Solemnity of All Saints.

Be what you are and be that well.

Winning in the Christian life is also called “being a saint." Winning is possible. Being a saint means willing what God wills. It means allowing every moment to be a holy moment by asking God to be present, offering Him each moment, and resolving to accept His will.

Mass Readings from November 1, 2015:
Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14
1 John 3:1-3
Matthew 5:1-12
