03/29/15 Give Me a Sign: The Heart of the Covenant

Homily from Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion.

The New Covenant is the very Heart of God.

For the early Church, the New Testament was the Eucharist. The New Covenant was sealed in the very Body and Blood of Jesus. Because of this New Covenant in Christ’s Body, we not only have a relationship with God, we have full access to God’s heart.

Mass Readings from March 29, 2015:
Isaiah 50:4-7
Philippians 2:6-11
Mark 14:1—15:47

03/22/15 Give Me A Sign: The Meal

Homily from the Fifth Sunday of Lent.

To consume the meal is to consummate the covenant.

The final and essential element to establishing a covenant is the sharing of a ritual meal. This action brought the covenant to completion, and sealed the family bonds. In the new and eternal covenant, the meal we consume is nothing less than the very Body and Blood of the God who hands Himself over for us.

Mass Readings from March 22, 2015:
Jeremiah 31:31-34
Hebrews 5:7-9
Mark 9:2-10

03/08/15 Give Me A Sign: The Oath

Homily from the Third Sunday of Lent.

Words mean something.

Words have power. When we call upon God to witness and be a part of our statements, they can become oaths. Oaths are essential for covenants and the stakes couldn't be higher. Every Sacrament is a covenant (or a participation in a covenant) and this means that we ought to be careful what we "say".

Mass Readings from March 8, 2015:
Exodus 20:1-17
Romans 8:31-34
Mark 9:2-10

03/01/15 Give Me a Sign: Sign and Sacrifice

Homily from the Second Sunday of Lent.

Real relationships involve real sacrifice.

Covenants establish real relationships. God's covenant with us, sealed by His own sacrifice, established that the Eucharist is the sign and the sacrifice of the new and eternal covenant.

Mass Readings from March 1, 2015:
Genesis 22:1-2, 9, 10-13, 15-18
Romans 8:31-34
Mark 9:2-10
